In 2021, we’re throwing out the outdated concept of ‘dressing your age’ once and for all. Because, if social media has taught us one thing, it’s that when it comes to style there are no age limits, and self-expression is timeless.
If you’re looking to diversify your feed – and find some fashion inspiration along the way – here are some of our favourite over-50 influencers from around the world.
Lyn Slater of The Accidental Icon started her blog, and subsequent Instagram, because she struggled to find magazines that reflected women like her. Nowhere seemed to be representing smart and fashion-conscious woman that were – as Slater puts it – living “interesting but ordinary lives.”
Fast forward six-or-so years, and Slater’s life is now anything but ordinary. Alongside her day job as a professor at Fordham University, she can now be found attending fashion weeks around the world, creating content with iconic brands, and working on her first book – all while documenting her lust-worthy style in daily Instagram posts.
Arlinda McIntosh – fondly referred to as the Fairy Skirt Mother by her followers – is known for her love of colourful styles and ultra-feminine shapes. One of our favourite influencers over 50, McIntosh is no stranger to a pattern clash. Her bold outfits piece together eclectic items for a look that is both timeless and incredibly modern.
In 1999, McIntosh took a leap of faith to follow her design dreams, setting up Sofistafunk The Skirt Company. With a slow fashion mentality at the core of the brand, Sofistafunk is a collection of versatile and voluminous zero-waste skirts.
The undisputed queen of maximalism, Iris Apfel’s ‘more is more’ attitude has made her a New York City legend. After leading a truly fascinating life – her long and lustrous career saw her work on many interior design restoration projects for the White House – Apfel found global notoriety in her 90s, after her Instagram account went viral.
With her signature statement glasses, wave of white hair, and penchant for the bright, bold and beautiful, Apfel proves that personal style can be a powerful tool for self expression at any age.
4. Korea Grandma
At 73 years of age, ‘Korea Grandma’ Park Makrae is South Korea’s most unlikely internet superstar. But, with almost 400,000 Instagram followers – and a whopping 1.3million Youtube followers – Makrae’s quirky style, delicious meals and cheeky posts attract fans from around the world.
Makrae is always well-dressed, with an eclectic taste that sees her clashing patterns and bright colours alongside her signature string of pearls. Makrae favours local sellers over big brands, and told Vogue that she purchases most of her wardrobe from a seller called Mr. Chung in her neighbourhood just outside of Seoul.
At 58, Yasmin Furmie’s style is perfectly honed: she’s exceptionally chic, with a wardrobe full of lust-worthy brand names from Maison Margiela to Puma – but she’s never a slave to trends.
The South African clothing designer (she co-founded SiSi The Collection, producing edgy and innovative twists on a classic white shirt) combines androgynous tailoring – think trouser suits in citrus yellow, and oversized blazers plucked directly from her husband’s wardrobe – with chic dresses. All this is given an edge with oversized sunglasses and chunky boots or sneakers. Furmie isn’t afraid of colour either, regularly clashing loud patterns and injecting a little happiness into her outfits with bold and bright accessories.
